21st - 24th June 2016 London Ontario

Volunteers

Volunteers are very important to help the annual STLHE conference run smoothly.

Why Volunteer?

What are the benefits of being a volunteer?

  • Meet colleagues from across Canada and around the world who are interested in teaching excellence and supporting student learning
  • See innovative teaching approaches, learn about research on teaching in higher education, and network with scholars from across multiple disciplines.
  • Add volunteer service to your CV, resume, or co-curricular record
  • Be entered into prize draws (including several gift baskets and two STLHE banquet tickets)
  • Receive a "fashionable" conference T-shirt that is yours to keep!
  • Save on conference registration fees:
    • If you are interested in attending the preconference and main conference, working two 5-hour shifts as a volunteer would entitle you to attend the rest of the conference for the one-day registration fee ($200 for students, $250 for STLHE members).
    • If you plan to volunteer for only one 5-hour shift, you will be free to attend sessions for the rest of that day (at either the pre-conference or the main conference).
    • If you are interested in attending only the main conference, working two 5-hour shifts would entitle you to attend the rest of the main conference at no cost.

STLHE 2016 Volunteer Position Descriptions

Volunteer duties are organized into 5-hour shifts, and you may sign-up to work more than one shift. All volunteers will be asked to complete an online orientation and attend a brief information meeting prior to their volunteer shift(s).Volunteer opportunities include:

Registration Support volunteers provide conference attendees with their welcome packages (e.g., name tag, conference program, etc.) as they arrive to the conference. Registration Support volunteers will also connect attendees with Wayfinders.

Wayfinders help people find their way to campus buildings, conference sessions, meals, accommodations, parking, etc. Wayfinders will be the first point of contact for most conference attendees and should be friendly and enthusiastic about providing quality support. Wayfinders will walk attendees to the location they are seeking, and maintain communication with conference planners to ensure information is disseminated in a timely fashion.

Session Moderators will provide face-to-face support to conference presenters during interactive workshops and research presentations. Moderators will meet the presenter(s) in the designated room, ensure that each presentation is set up smoothly (find IT support if necessary), introduce the presenter(s), and remain for the duration of the session. Moderators will keep time, close the session, and pass on any relevant announcements to attendees.

Social Media Support volunteers attract and interact with targeted virtual communities and networks. Volunteers in this role will use their excellent writing and editing skills to generate, edit, publish and share daily content of the conference (original text, images, video, or HTML) that will build meaningful connections and encourage community member engagement. Social Media Support will moderate all user-generated content to ensure professional integrity. Generating and publishing content in both English and French will be encouraged

IT Support volunteers will provide audio-visual support to conference presenters as needed throughout the conference. Volunteers will provide technology help as needed throughout the conference and should feel comfortable operating computers and AV equipment. IT Support volunteers will be trained on the particulars of campus AV equipment prior to the conference.

Greeters welcome people as they arrive at various venues throughout the conference. Greeters will connect conference attendees with Wayfinders, and should be friendly and enthusiastic about providing quality support. Greeters will maintain communication with conference planners to ensure information is disseminated in a timely fashion, and may also be asked to assist in other areas as the conference progresses and needs arise.

Floaters provide assistance in any area that may arise throughout the conference. Floaters will be asked to take on whatever role needs support in the moment (e.g., Registration Support, Wayfinder, or Greeter). Floaters should be friendly and enthusiastic about providing quality support to conference attendees.
